Case Study

Renovating your kitchen is a rewarding endeavour that adds both aesthetic appeal and functionality to your home. This meticulous process of transforming tired, worn-out cabinets into a stunning focal point is highly effective as we found in our recent project in Lower Bourne, Farnham.

Steps

Step 1: Removal by Professional Kitchen Fitter

The first crucial step in this cabinet transformation is the removal of the cabinets by a skilled professional kitchen fitter. This ensures a smooth and hassle-free process, minimising the risk of damage to the cabinets or surrounding areas.

Step 2: Thorough Degreasing and Washing

Once the cabinets are removed, they are thoroughly degreased to eliminate any built-up grime and grease. A meticulous washing with warm water ensures a clean surface for the subsequent steps of the refinishing process.

Step 3: Machine Sanding with 320 Grit

To achieve a smooth and even surface, the cabinets undergo machine sanding with 320-grit sandpaper. This step removes any imperfections and prepares the surface for the next stages of the transformation.

Step 4: Filling and Sanding

Chemical filler is then applied to fill in any remaining imperfections, followed by another round of sanding to achieve a flawless surface. This step is crucial for creating a pristine canvas for the application of the Smalt colour.

Step 5: Application of Intercoat High Build MDF Primer

Two wet coats of Intercoat high build MDF primer are applied to the cabinets. This specialised primer provides a solid foundation for the subsequent layers and enhances the durability of the final finish.

Step 6: Sanding Back with 400 Grit

After the primer has dried, the cabinets are sanded back with 400-grit sandpaper to achieve an ultra-fine finish. This step ensures that the surface is perfectly smooth and ready for the application of the Smalt colour.

Step 7: One Coat of Intercoat Polyurethane in Little Green Smalt 255

The magic happens with the application of one coat of Intercoat polyurethane in the captivating Little Greene’s Smalt 255 colour. This premium British industrial paint, sold by LE Wents Ltd, in Farnham, is renowned for its toughness and quality.

About the Paint

Little Greene’s Smalt colour is more than just a paint; it has a rich history dating back to 200BC. The origins of Smalt as a pigment involve the encapsulation of cobalt into glass, resulting in a beautiful, vibrant blue hue. This technique resurfaced and gained popularity in the 18th century.

As you can see, the transformation of kitchen cabinets into a Smalt masterpiece involves a meticulous process, from removal and thorough preparation to the application of high-quality primers and paints. The result is a vibrant and durable finish that not only revitalises the kitchen but also pays homage to a colour with a fascinating history dating back to 200BC.
